Skanska has signed a contract to build the new Women and Children’s Health Building for Christiana Care Health System at the Christiana Hospital Campus south of Newark.

The contract is valued at $178 million.

The project, which was earlier approved by Delaware heath care regulators, consists of an   8-story expansion, totaling nearly 400,000 square feet,  will include a replacement neonatal intensive-care unit, and the expansion of outpatient units, and lab, pharmacy and dietary clinical and logistical support services.

Christiana Care has a nationally known neonatal program that has addressed the state’s high infant mortality rate. Its latest challenge includes a larger percentage of babies born  to mothers addicted to drugs.

The expansion also includes the expansion of a four-level parking garage for patients and visitors, which Skanska was previously awarded. Total cost of the project is estimated at $260 million.  Click here for additional details.

Delaware has seen at least $1  billion   in new hospital construction projects and renovations in recent years at Alfred I. DuPont Hospital for Children, Christiana  Care’s Wilmington Hospital campus; and at a $250 million Bayhealth campus in Milford that is now in the site preparation stage.

Construction is underway and the Christiana  project is slated for completion in January 2020, Skanska reported.

The expansion also includes a four-level parking garage near the hospital’s main entrance for patients and visitors.

Skanska is a multi-national construction company based in Sweden.

“The Christiana Care Health System is one of the largest health care providers in the Mid-Atlantic region offering services including Alzheimer’s care, cancer care, and home health care,” said Skanska USA Executive Vice President and General Manager Ed Szwarc. “Together with Christiana Care Health System and HKS Architects, we will complete a major expansion that provides the Christiana Medical Staff with the resources and space that is required to deliver the highest quality care to patients and their families.”

The expansion also includes a four-level parking garage near the hospital’s main entrance for patients and visitors.

Skanska has experience in the Pennsylvania and the Delaware Valley that includes   projects such as the Nicholas and Athena Karabots Pavilion Addition at the Franklin Institute, Terminal F Baggage Claim Addition and Ticketing Renovation at the Philadelphia International Airport, University of Delaware East Campus Residence Hall, SugarHouse Casino and the Nemours/A.I. duPont Hospital for Children.

Another large project in Delaware for Skanska was the $150 million Indian River Bridge on the southern edge of state.
