State Sen. Colin Bonini has called for a right to work law in Delaware. Bonini faces a Republican primary battle with retired state trooper and Sussex County business owner Lacey Lafferty.
In the latest in a series of policy announcements, Bonini said the law is needed to bring jobs to the state.
Bonini stated, “Regardless of whether one supports or opposes moving to a Right to Work model, the reality is that businesses do not build facilities and bring their core businesses to states that are not Right to Work. If Delaware ever wants to be a manufacturing hub again, we must pursue Right to Work policies. It’s no longer a matter of choice; it’s a necessity. Delaware deserves a chief executive with the courage to take up this fight. I have that courage.”
Right to work laws bar unions from mandatory collection of dues from employees representing a bargaining unit. Most states in the region, with the exception of Virginia, do not have right to work laws.
Right to work laws have traditionally enjoyed little support in a state that up until fairly recently had a contingent of pro-labor Republicans. Also, Democrats now control both houses and the governor’s office.
Lafferty has run an anti-incumbent campaign, claiming that current political leaders do not possess the right skills. Bonini is a long-time state senator who represents the Dover area.
Lafferty says state spending is out of control and told Delaware Public Media too much money is being spent on frill, citing bike trails as one example. She was also critical of incentives given to large corporations like JPMorgan Chase to add jobs in the state and over-regulation of small business.
