Delaware City Refinery towersThe Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control has reported the release of more than 12 tons of sulfur dioxide at the Delaware City Refinery in the early morning hours on Thursday.

DNREC reported the release of 25,000 pounds of sulfur dioxide from the site owned by PBF Energy.  It was one of the largest emissions in years.

Problems in the refining process led to the flaring incident, DNREC reported. Flaring, which results in highly visible flames,  occurs when equipment failures result in the need to flare gases into the air.

The refinery is required to report toxic releases to the community.
