Beginning Thursday, at 2:00 p.m., all construction work on the Delaware Memorial Bridge Twin Spans will be suspended for the Memorial Day holiday weekend.
All lanes of the Delaware Memorial Bridge – both northbound and southbound – will be open to traffic. All lanes will remain open through Tuesday, May 31 until 9:00 a.m.
The Delaware River and Bay Authority’s contractor, Mumford & Miller Concrete, Inc. of Middletown, continues to work on Stage 1 of the I-295 Southbound Reconstruction project at the Route 13 interchange to Interstate 95/495.
The work is taking place approximately one mile west of the Delaware Memorial Bridge Toll Plaza. While two southbound mainline through-lanes are maintained at all times, high traffic volume and motor vehicle accidents in this area have caused traffic delays, especially during holidays.
During the upcoming Memorial Day holiday weekend – Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday, May 27-30 – traffic is expected to be heavy – particularly on Friday and Saturday.
“When traffic counts exceed 60,000, traffic tends to become more congested and delays are more likely,” said Brent Van Lith, DRBA project engineer. “During the same period last year, traffic statistics for both Friday and Saturday on the Delaware Memorial Bridge exceeded 60,000 and this area experienced some delays without the presence of construction.”
While DRBA engineers have designed the project to minimize traffic delay, motorists may see back-ups. Based on historical data, motorists should expect the heaviest traffic during the following time periods:
Friday, May 27: 12:00 noon – 7:00 p.m.
Saturday, May 28: 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
Motorists are urged to be careful and to stay alert in and around construction zones and obey all posted speed limit signs. Travelers are also reminded that DRBA police units will maintain an active presence in the construction area and will strictly enforce motor vehicle laws. Fines for speeding and other moving violations are doubled in a construction zone.
