Grain Craft Bar + Kitchen  has received a variance from the City of Newark for an outdoor deck at its location on East Main Street.

The patio would add seasonal seating at the popular venue that was formerly the site of Mojo Main and  East End Café.

Grain – which offers restaurant and bar fare, as well as acoustic live entertainment – sits back from Main Street, making it less visible to passersby.  Grain  already has an enclosed patio that operates during much of the year

“We want to be the visual start of  Main Street,” co-owner Lee Mikles said of the expansion.

The patio is targeted for completion in mid-summer. According to Mikles, the project still requires plans and permits.

Grain is part of a turnaround taking place on East Main Street. The Newark Shopping Center has undergone a renovation that  includes a large student  housing complex.

Also in the works are plans to overhaul the now-closed cinema complex.
