Delaware ranks in the middle of pack and well below its neighbors in an Earth Day list of the nation’s greenest states.

The list came from the WalletHub financial website.

The ranking of 24th is well below the 10th and 11th rating respectively for New Jersey and Maryland. Pennsylvania ranked 18th, despite its history of coal mining, oil and more recently gas production.

Dragging down Delaware’s ranking was a dismal ranking of 42 in environmental quality and finishing 31st in eco-friendly behaviors.

The greenest state was the Green Mountain State, Vermont. No. 50 was Wyoming, an oil and coal producing state.

The middle-of-the-pack rating came even though the state has drastically cut emissions from power plants, with only one generating unit now fueled by coal.

Delaware has a history of chemical, petroleum and tannery production and a number of Superfund sites.
