Thanks in part to expanded service from ultra low-cost carriers, passenger traffic at Philadelphia International Airport exceeded 31 million in 2015, its highest number of passengers since 2008.
The airport serves passengers from Delaware.
Total passenger traffic at PHL for 2015 was 31.4 million, its fifth highest total, and a 2.3 percent increase from 2014. PHL had a record 32.2 million travelers in 2007.
“The numbers reflect an optimism about the market and our local economy,” said Airport CEO Chellie Cameron. “Throughout our industry, many of our peers are reporting similar increases in passenger traffic. We are very pleased by this trend and are optimistic it will continue in 2016.”
In Philadelphia, ultra-low fare carriers Frontier and Spirit expanded service, easing fears that the merger of US Airways and American would lead to reductions in fights.
Frontier plans to serve about two-dozen cities with nonstop flights from Philadelphia.
Frontier dropped remaining flights from New Castle Airport last spring.
Meanwhile, Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport reported a record 23,823,532 commercial passengers
Passenger traffic for the year grew 6.8 percent over 2014.
Growing international traffic contributed to the record figures. New international airlines and new global routes increased international passenger traffic by 31.9 percent for the year. International service, along with improved passenger amenities.
And in New Orleans…
No other airport would have the list below.
But when you are in New Orleans and the airport is Louis Armstrong International, food and music are at the top of the list.
In announcing record passenger traffic of nearly 10.7 million for 2015, up from 7.8 million in 2010. The airport also listed the following:
- 58,011 cups of gumbo
- 228,253 beignets
- 64,542 plates of jambalaya
- 136,886 to-boys
- 393,671 regular cups of coffee
- 1,040 live music performances
The airport currently has 14 airlines providing service to 52 non-stop destinations, including four international destinations. Frontier Airlines plans to offer a couple of weekly flights as it expands service from Philadephia.
