Close to 200 local educators took charge of their professional development during an interactive workshop at St. Georges Technical High School in Middletown. Lessons, strategies and personalized learning tools were all part of the second annual Personalized Learning Workshop presented by the Rodel Teacher Council.
Billed as a workshop for teachers, by teachers—the day featured sessions led by Rodel Teacher Council members representing elementary, middle, and high school classrooms throughout the state, as well as early childhood, CTE and special education. Sessions also featured the Schoology learning management system, as well as an EdCamp block, which permitted attendees to connect and share knowledge with each other.
“Today was all about Delaware teachers coming together to take ownership of their own professional development, and to actually help to shape the future of education,” said RTC member Tim Brewer, a science teacher at St. Georges.
Personalized learning offers an improved vision for education—one that attempts to buck the “one-size-fits-all” model of instruction in favor of individualized attention based on student need. With personalized learning, students become the center of the learning environment, and are encouraged to work at their own pace, and often utilize technology to support learning.
In spring of 2016, the council will release policy projects providing further insight and detail into specific policy shifts related to personalized learning and how Delaware can take an innovative approach to scaling this practice across the state.
The Rodel Teacher Council was convened in 2013 by the Rodel Foundation of Delaware to elevate the voices of teachers throughout Delaware. They represent the diversity of Delaware teachers and were identified through a selective process that assessed their accomplishments, leadership, and solution-oriented mindset. The goal of the Rodel Teacher Council is to provide a venue for teachers to weigh in on important issues that affect the work of educators and help set the course for future education improvements.
