Tamika R. Montgomery-Reeves was publicly sworn in for her first term as a Vice Chancellor of the Delaware Court of Chancery on Friday at the New Castle County Courthouse in Wilmington.
Vice Chancellor Montgomery-Reeves replaces Vice Chancellor Donald F. Parsons Jr., who retired from the bench in October.
Following the Oath of Office, Gov. Jack A. Markell, former Chancellor William B. Chandler III and Douglas J. Clark, Esq. of Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati, offered remarks.
Before her appointment, Montgomery-Reeves was a partner at Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati, where she focused on corporate governance, navigation of corporate fiduciary duties, and corporate litigation.
Before joining that firm, the Vice Chancellor practiced in the securities and corporate governance department of Weil, Gotshal & Manges LLP.
Reeves has been recognized for her pro bono contribution to the Prisoners’ Rights Project and previously served as a law clerk for former Chancellor William B. Chandler III.
Reeves graduated from University of Georgia School of Law and received her Bachelor’s Degree magna cum laude from the University of Mississippi. She currently resides in Wilmington with her husband and their son.
Montgomery-Reeves is the first African-American and second woman to serve on Chancery Court in Delaware history. Chancery Court is considered to be America’s top court for judging complex issues regarding corporations.
A court of equity, Chancery also handles wills, estates, and other civil matters.
Montgomery and her husband Jeffry have a son, Jackson.
