A leak in a boiler is resulting in the release of 500 pounds a day of sulfur dioxide, a byproduct of the refining process and a chemical that is considered a hazardous by the Environmental Protection Agency.

Disclosure of releases is available for those who sign up for the alerts from DNREC.

The releases have become less commonplace with new equipment and environmental standards. The refinery has reported reduced  emissions each year.
