LakePlastic container maker Hedwin Corp. will move  operations to Delaware early next year, with plans to move its operations from the Baltimore area by 2017.

The company chose a site in the Pencader south of Newark, the Baltimore Sun reported in late December.

Fujimori Kogyo Co. Ltd. bought Hedwin for $22.2 million at a bankruptcy auction this year. The Baltimore plant employs about 300.

Landing Hedwin is good news for Delaware, which has struggled to hold on to manufacturing jobs.

The News Journal reported that the company could bring 150 to 300 jobs to the county, after an interview with New Castle County economic development  director Marcus Henry.

New Castle County has ramped up economic development efforts that had largely been handled by the state after County Executive Tom Gordon ordered a long-term economic strategy, citing the loss of jobs in manufacturing and other areas.

Late last month, Delaware Economic Development Office  officials did not return a request for comment on the move.

After searching in this area and elsewhere in Maryland, and in Virginia, Pennsylvania, southern New Jersey and Delaware, the company chose a plant in Newark, Del., that had been the headquarters of Kubetech Custom Moulding Inc., a company that was acquired earlier this year. Kubetech had also operated a headquarters at the site.

The company, which is also involved in packaging is now known as Coveris. The Pencader plant has a configuration that would lend itself to the lines offered by the long-time Baltimore employer.

The company announced earlier this year it was looking for sites in the region, after determining the Baltimore-area  site  was not suitable for making a product line.
