Delmarva Power is asking small business and residential customers to conserve energy on Tuesday, Sept. 2, as high temperatures return to the region and schools move back into full operation.
For Delaware residential and small commercial customers, Tuesday will be a Peak Savings Day. That means customers will be rewarded with bill credits when they voluntarily reduce energy use. Delaware customers will automatically receive a phone call indicating that the savings period will be from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 2.
According to the utility, residential and small commercial customers who reduce energy use below their specified baseline during the specific hours of the Peak Savings Day can receive a credit of $1.25 off their bill for every kilowatt hour (kWh) of reduced usage through the program.
Delaware and Maryland customers participating in Delmarva Power’s Energy Wise Rewards program, a conservation event will be called from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 2. This means that Delmarva Power will cycle participants’ air conditioner compressors off and on for short intervals during that period. Because the air conditioner fans will continue to run, most customers will not notice a temperature change in their homes, and those who do should experience only a 1- to 3-degree change.
Energy Wise Rewards is a voluntary program for customers, offering a choice of a programmable thermostat or an outdoor switch, which the utility installs at no charge to customers.
During summer periods of peak electric demand, Energy Wise Rewards works to reduce electricity usage by cycling air conditioner compressors off and on for short periods during times of peak electricity use. Customers will receive a bill reduction in return for allowing Delmarva Power to cycle their air conditioners a few days each year.
