Another Republican has jumped into the race for State Treasurer.

Sher Valenzuela, Milford,  announced this week she would seek the post.  She will oppose Ken Simpler of Newark. Simpler works for a Delmarva hotel development firm. Valenzuela is co-owner of First State Manufacturing, an upholstery company.

Valenzuela ran against Lt. Gov. Matt Denn and lost by a wide margin. She may be best known for giving a speech at the Republican National Convention as the party worked to widen its appeal to women.

Valenzuela said she would campaign on a platform of less government.

Democrat Sean  Barney, a veteran and former aide to Gov. Jack Markell,  earlier announced he would run against incumbent Chip Flowers. Flowers’ first term has been marked by controversy over his proposal to widen the power of the office to invest funds.

The dispute over investments  left Flowers at loggerheads with legislative leaders and the Markell administration.

He also took heat for the credit card use of an aide and a trip to Alaska for a convention of state treasurers.

Republicans now control one statewide office with long-time State Auditor Tom Wagner facing a Democratic challenger. It is widely viewed that Republicans, now at a voter registration disadvantage might have the best chance with a run at the treasury post.
