A group seeking $15 an hour wages for fast food workers will hold a press event outside a McDonald’s on 4625 Kirkwood Highway, west of Wilmington, to talk about a National Labor Relations Board decision.
The group, known as DE Fast Food Forward says the ruling paves the way for parent corporations of McDonald’s, Burger King and other chains to take responsibility for treatment of fast food workers by franchisees.
A coalition has staged protests in northern Delaware, following a $15 an hour campaign that got under way in 2012 in New York City with a brief walkout.
The groups seeking the $15 an hour wage say current workers are often single parents holding down a number of jobs to make ends meet.
Fast food chains say paying the higher wages would lead to layoffs, higher prices and remaining jobs going to more experienced workers. Delaware has raised its minimum wage by 50 cents to 7.75 an hour this year, with the rate going up to $8.25 an hour in 2015.
