EZ passEZPass providers are warning customers about an email scheme that attempts to record credit card information.

In Delaware, the Delaware Department of Transportation and Delaware River and Bay Authority offer the toll payment service that sharply reduces lines at toll plazas and bridges.

The Email message claims the account must be replenished and provides a link in an effort to obtain a credit card number.  The DelDOT  EZPass website advised customers against clicking on links related to the email.

The scam does tap into the common use of email by EZPass. EZ Pass uses a vehicle-based transponder to pay tolls, with email notifications letting customers know that their account needs to be replenished via credit or debit card. The system  contributed to fewer traffic back-ups on Interstate 95 entering Delaware, after high-speed toll recording lanes were added.

Usually, accounts are automatically replenished,  but with credit and debit card numbers being changed regularly, customers  get requests to take immediate action by updating card information.

However, such actions never require account information changes to be made via email. Instead, the customer can call or stop by an EZ Pass office,e or update their account via their account in an EZPass website.

Another way to detect a phishing scheme is check the return email, which is always an address without the URL (web address) of the agency or business.
