Medical office fire in Lewes causes $1 million in damage

Fire marshallA fire at a Lewes medical office building caused $1 million in damage.

The Delaware State Fire Marshal’s reported the blaze on Thursday caused severe damage to the two story building housing the Mid Atlantic Family Practice on   the 20000 block of John J Williams Highway.

The fire was reported at 3:41 p.m. The Rehoboth Beach Volunteer Fire Company, assisted by Lewes, Indian River, Milton, Georgetown, Millsboro, Dagsboro, Bethany Beach, Slaughter Beach, Gumboro, and Roxana fire companies extinguished the flames. There was one reported minor injury to a firefighter from Indian River Volunteer  Fire Co. The firefighter was treated and released from Beebe Medical Center in Lewes.

State fire investigators were called to the scene. The investigation is continuing at this time, to determine the origin and cause of the fire.

The investigation determined the origin of the fire started on the west end of the building when an accidental mulch fire rapidly ignited the exterior finish of the building, according to a release from the Fire Marshal’s office.
