Chief medical examiner suspended as investigation into missing drugs continues

Examiner's office The state’s chief medical examiner has been suspended  as an investigation continues into missing drug evidence.

Delaware Health and Social Services Secretary Rita Landgraf confirmed that  Dr. Richard Callery, Chief Medical Examiner, was suspended with pay pending completion of an internal human resources investigation. The suspension was effective on February 25, 2014, and will continue until the investigation is complete.

Hal Brown, Deputy Director of the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, is in charge of the office’s operations.

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, the office is continuing to cooperate with the Delaware State Police investigation of the handling of drug evidence at the Controlled Substances Laboratory.

Drugs have been reportedly missing from the laboratory, leading to concern about the status of many cases.

The laboratory in Wilmington is best known as the site of autopsies  and death investigations.
