Appoquinimink High School  Computer Science Teacher/Math Educator James Sekcienski received a $10,000 award from Code.org that when combined with  additional support  secured on the website DonorChoice.org. will be used to buy 31 Dell  computers for his classroom.

Code.org is a program that aims to move more young people into technology careers through experience in writing computer code. The program has reported sharp increases in coding work  by Hispanic, African American and female students.

The new workstations will be equipped with faster processing capabilities, a necessity for advanced programming work. The Appoquinimink  School District offers AP Computer Science classes at both its high schools.

The district is piloting a program that introduces computer science at the elementary level and hopes to eventually offer introductory level programming at all  elementary schools.

Support secured on DonorsChoose.org included gifts from the Walt Disney Company, local Horace Mann Representative Dieter Hofmann, and several anonymous sources.
