Between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 13, the same weekend that the Army-Navy game comes to town, north Wilmington-based Suiting Warriors is a guest of a SMART (Strengthening the Mid-Atlantic Region for Tomorrow) and the Veterans Speed Networking Event, as part of the Community Service Project of the Sports & Education Expo at the Pennsylvania Convention Center.

The event is free for veterans, military spouses and military service members. Suiting Warriors will provide free suits in a range of suit sizes and colors for men and women veterans including ties and shirts.

County government  unit holding coat and food drive

The New Castle County Community Services Unit  is holding its first annual “Winter Coat and Canned Food Drive,” that  runs through December 16th.

Collection boxes were  set up in the lobby of the New Castle County Paul J. Sweeney Public Safety Building,  601 North Dupont Highway in New Castle, where new or gently used coats for men, women and children can be dropped off along with a canned item.

On the 18th, the coats will be distributed at the Garfield Park Police Athletic League building located at 26 Karlyn Drive, New Castle, from 1 p.m. to  7 p.m.

Any remaining coats will be given to the Sunday Breakfast Mission and all donated canned goods will be sent to the Food Bank of Delaware. For more information please contact the Community Services Unit at (302) 395-8050.

$50,000 grant from TD 

TD Bank presented a $50,000 grant to the Delaware Financial Education Institute to support efforts in continuing to provide free Financial Literacy to Delaware  individuals, particularly those with  low-to moderate income.

The grant was presented during a ceremony marking the opening of a credit card operation for TD Bank. The institute was founded by then State Treasurer  Jack Markell as  the Money School in an effort to improve financial literacy in the state. It became a non-profit organization and now offers a wide range of programs.

Dunkin’ Donuts donation

Dunkin’ Donuts Greater Philly and all of the Delaware Dunkin’ Donuts franchisees donated $25,000 to the Food Bank of Delaware.

Paper pumpkins were sold at area stores in  October and the total raised by the public was matched by Dunkin’ Donuts.
