Painter injured after short fall at Delaware Memorial Bridge

An  Allied Painting employee fell while painting an area  of the Delaware bound span of the Delaware Memorial Bridge at around 10 a.m. on Saturday.

Julio Rivera, 40, of Newark, was painting under the roadway deck between the Delaware Tower and the anchorage when he fell. . He ended up trapped on the lower cat walk.

Delaware River and Bay Authority police officers along with numerous fire and EMS units, including the New Castle County Technical High Angle Rescue team,  went to the scene. Rescue personnel were able to free Rivera and transfer him to the bridge deck.

Minquadale Fire Company and New Castle County Paramedics transported Rivera  to Christiana Care Medical Center for treatment.  Rivera was conscious, alert, and attempting to speak with paramedics. He had injuries to wrist, arm and abdomen. His current condition is unknown.

Two lanes were closed   resulting in minor traffic delays. All lanes were re-opened at 11:45 a.m.
