The Delaware Community Foundation issued a record- $28.4 million in grants and scholarships, to nonprofit organizations and students statewide.
In Fiscal Year 2013, which ended on June 30, the DCF awarded 425 scholarships totaling more than $470,000 and approximately 2,000 charitable grants, which include awards from donors’ charitable funds to causes they care about; grants to nonprofit organizations from their own endowed funds; and grants that the DCF and its Giving Circles award directly to community organizations.
Among this year’s awards are two unique, one-time grants totaling $13.3 million – one of the two large grants supported Sussex Academy, and the other directed money from the Mount Cuba Center Fund to purchase land for the First State National Monument. Even when the with large gifts are subtracted, the remaining $15.1 million still exceeds DCF’s typical grant year. In 2012, the DCF awarded $13 million – close to average= in scholarships and grants supporting causes ranging from hunger to education to the arts.
“The Delaware Community Foundation exists to support community growth through grants every year. Thanks to our fundholders, Fiscal Year 2013 was a particularly strong year for us and for Delaware,” DCF CEO Fred Sears said. “Delaware is full of people who care and give generously to their community,” he said. “It’s our privilege at the DCF to help these individuals and organizations maximize their resources to make a real and lasting impact.”
