David Blitzer and Joshua Harris completed the purchase of the New Jersey Devils hockey team from the current ownership group controlled by Jeffrey Vanderbeek. The transaction includes the team’s long-term operating interest in the Prudential Center in Newark  and related assets.

The deal raised eyebrows, since the Devils are a rival to the Philadelphia Flyers NHL team. It also led to speculation that the owners could move the Sixers to Newark, N.J. That possibility was quickly discounted by professional sports analysts.

The 76er, under Blitzer and Harris, s are bringing an NBA Development League team to Delaware. Known as the ’87ers, the team will play at the Bob Carpenter Center on the University of Delaware Newark campus.

Blitzer has a senior position with the Blackstone Group, a private equity firm that was part of the purchase of the PBF Delaware City Refinery a few years ago.

Before becoming CEO of the 76ers earlier this year, O’Neil was President of Madison Square Garden Sports, where he oversaw the business operations of three professional sports teams: the New York Rangers, the New York Knicks, and the New York Liberty.
