Delaware City Refinery to hold community day on Saturday

    The public will get a rare chance to tour  the Delaware City Refinery on Saturday.

    The refinery, owned by PBF Energy, will hold a community day on Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., just outside the gates off Wrangle Hill Road. Preparations for the event were in evidence on Thursday.

    Advertising indicates the event will include guided refinery tours, refreshments, exhibits  and activities  for children.

    The refinery went back into operation more than a year ago after coming close to demolition under former owner Valero. A financial package that include state and county help that was used in the financial package that resulted in the reopening.

    Published reports indicate  the refinery employs 500, with hundreds more often working on site  as contractors.

    The refinery is owned by New Jersey-based PBF Energy, which recently announced that a large chunk of crude oil processed at the site will come from North Dakota and Canada, via rail. The refinery had traditionally received crude oil from overseas sources through its dock on the Delaware River.
