Amazon.com marked the 15th anniversary of its New Castle site with a Saturday afternoon celebration for hundreds of associates and their families.
The oldest distribution site for the company still in operation, the New Castle fulfillment center represented a major expansion project for the young Seattle company that specialized in selling books and other products via the Internet. The company went on to dominate the book-selling business and now has a similar position in the electronic book market with its Kindle line.
The site has been a part of the history of the giant company that now dominates Internet retailing. New Castle was the site of the launch for one of the series of Harry Potter and more recently the company’s biggest seller, the Kindle Fire tablet.
In brief remarks, Delaware Gov. Jack Markell praised Amazon and noted that it was important that the company retained the New Castle site. The governor was referring to company’s newest site in Middletown, which is slated to open later this year.
As part of the celebration, Amazon.com General Manager Cindy Switzer presented a donation of 30 Kindles and $2,000 in gift cards to the High Roads School. The school serves specials needs students from 6th to 12th grade.
