A surgical  material from W.L. Gore and Associates may be less prone to infections than another product using porous high-density polyethylene when it comes to nose cosmetic surgery.

The findings were published in the Archives of Facial Plastic Surgery.

An abstract of the article said 662 rhinoplasty procedures were studied. When Gore’s ePTFE was used the infection rate was 5.3 percent while the form of  polyethylene had a nearly one in five rate. A story  in the New York Daily News noted that the materials can have different uses in surgery and may not always be interchangeable.

According to the abstract, caution is strongly recommended when considering the use of the polyethylene material  in rhinoplasty.

Gore is headquartered in Newark, Del. Its medical operations are headquartered in Flagstaff, Ariz.
