Newark, Del. Mayor Vance Funk III will run for another term next year. The mayor made the brief announcement on his Facebook page.
There had been widespread speculation that Funk would not run for another term after serving two four-year terms.
Funk operates a law firm in Newark that specializes in real estate matters.
During Funk’s time as mayor, the city has seen a continuing renaissance of its downtown area, while battling a tough economy that contributed to the closing of the half-century-old Chrysler assembly plant. The city’s downtown was named as one of the top five in the nation last year by the National Main Street Program.
Bloom Energy is now slated to build a fuel cell plant on a portion of that 300-acre site now owned by the University of Delaware.
The mayor has been a strong supporter of Main Street and events designed to bring more people into downtown.
