It’s not something that DuPont would go out of its way to publicize. But the Delaware company is coming up with lightweight solution to providing protection for vehicles in Brazil.

The unit, DuPont Armura, has managed to make headlines because it is taking vehicle protection beyond the Chevy Tahoes and Cadillacs used by governments and corporate bigwigs.

Armura is using DuPont’s venerable Kevlar to give protection for Hondas and even Kias driven by the middle class in a nation with a high crime rate.

Another plus for Armura is the possibility of providing the protection for Brazil’s taxi fleet in time for the 2016 Olympics.

Obviously, bringing armor to the masses is a potentially huge business in a number of nations, but has a number of pitfalls, including the risk of protected vehicles falling into the hands of the bad guys.

For now, DuPont Armura is sticking with Brazil, one of the world’s largest economies.
