Fast-growing brewer Dogfish Head plans to keep on growing with a 28,000-square foot addition to its site in Milton, the Cape Gazette reported.

The expansion received an OK from Milton’s Planning and Zoning Commission.

Acceptance of the plans  has not always been smooth sailing for the home-growing company, with an earlier warehouse project drawing opposition, the newspaper reported.

Jobs are a precious commodity in Sussex County, but  some residents are not happy with the prospects of noise and truck traffic that come with manufacturing expansion projects.

Dogfish is one of a number of craft bewers that are carefully expanding their facilities.

While market share numbers remain small, their ability to sell their brews at premium prices is  making expansion a sound proposition,   putting pressure on the largely foreign owned American brewing industry. A notable exception is Pennsylvania’s Yuengling, which is also seeing growth.

The majors’ traditional response, price cutting, does not work with well with craft brewers, leaving the big guys with the option of creating their own brews, a more difficult challenge.
