The scary overdose death toll over Thanksgiving

Good morning all,

Yesterday afternoon, the state reported 11 deaths over the Thanksgiving holiday period from suspected overdoses. (See story below).

Delaware has seen spikes in overdoses at other times this year, often from deadly dosages making their way to the street.

Still, the fact that the deaths took place took place at a time known for time spent with families is deeply troubling. No pattern to the deaths, such as overly powerful doses, was detected.

State Health and Social Services  Secretary Dr. Kara Odom Walker said the stress that comes with holiday and family time was a likely factor.

As the story below noted, the state is taking steps to help families and those suffering from addiction to get treatment.

Meanwhile, the availability and use of the overdose-reversing drug naloxone has dramatically increased.

Along with the spike in deaths comes the growing realization within the business community that the addiction crisis is becoming a threat to the current and future workforce, as well as overall competitiveness.

New Jersey Governor and University of Delaware alum Chris  Christie has devoted his final year in office to the addiction issue as he continues to take heat for the “Bridgegate” scandal and other moves earlier in his term.

Despite his sometimes puzzling track record,  Christie has his priorities straight when it comes to addiction. Gov. Carney,   who has been involved in the addiction fighting effort,    may want to take a page or two from Christie’s playbook and take  a more public leadership role.

Finally, today is Giving Tuesday and the Emails have been pouring in. Many worthy nonprofits deserve your help, including some organizations dealing with the multitude of issues coming out of the addiction crisis.
