Lockdown reported after incident at state corrections center near Smyrna

A statewide lockdown of prisons is under way after an incident at the James T. Vaughn Correctional Center near Smyrna.

Spokespeople for the governor and the Corrections Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

However, media reports indicated that a lockdown was in place.

That is standard procedure when significant incidents take place within corrections systems.

Prison incidents pose many risks in terms of people and the political aftermath.

A hostage incident at the end of the first term of  Gov. Ruth Ann Minner and comments she made that in the minds of some seemed to downplay  the incident contributed to the governor being elected by a narrow margin to a second term.
