 Gunnip & Company CPAs, north Wilmington  announced the following promotions and additions.

Katie Pfeffer has been promoted to Supervisor. She started her career with Gunnip as an intern the summer of 2008 and accepted a permanent position after graduating from Grove City College in May 2009. She is a part of Gunnip’s assurance team, focusing on the audit and review of employee benefit plans, construction and real estate entities and nonprofit organizations. 

Mike Kemske  has been promoted to Senior Staff Accountant. Mike received a Bachelor of Science in Accounting from West Chester University. He joined the firm’s Audit and Assurance team in October 2014.

Nick Koppel joins the firm as a senior accountant on the firm’s audit and assurance team. He graduated from the University of Delaware and worked the last several years in another local firm. Koppel is part of the firm’s auditing and accounting team, and will work with our single-audit and government clients.

 Brian Joos graduated from West Chester University with a B.S. in Accounting and Finance in 2015. He joins us after working with a firm in West Chester. He will work with a variety of corporations, partnerships and limited liability companies as well as individuals in the areas of federal, multi-state and local income taxation.

Nick Perkucin graduated from the University of Delaware in May 2016 with a B.S. in Accounting and Finance. Nick is part of the firm’s assurance, compliance and consulting service practice, providing services to closely-held companies.

Medical Society  director to retire

Mark A. Meister, executive director of the Medical Society of Delaware (MSD), has announced his pending retirement to the staff and the members of the organization. Meister has served in this capacity since joining MSD in April of 1989.

Meister plans to step down as MSD’s Executive Director in July 2017.

A succession planning and leadership transition team has been formed and an executive search firm engaged to assist in helping recruit Meister’s replacement. 

During his tenure as Executive Director, Meister has led MSD through an ongoing process of  volution in response to Delaware’s changing health care environment, including: the formation of MedNet, a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Medical Society of Delaware that provides contract management and practice support to over 900 physicians  in the  state; HealthHub, an entity specializing in providing health information technology (HIT) through a suite of products and services to the physician community; Voluntary Initiative Program (VIP), a safety net program for the uninsured that helps coordinate physician and referral services and resources for patients; and Delaware’s first-ever statewide patient centered medical home initiative.

In 2011, Meister was awarded  the Medical Executive Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Medical Association.  In 1999, he was given the President’s Award and in 2004 the Daniel A. Alvarez, M.D. Distinguished Service Award in recognition of his work with the Medical Society of Delaware. 

 SoDel Concepts names event coordinator

Scott Kammerer, president of SoDel Concepts, recently announced the promotion of Kathleen Heffernan to the position of event coordinator at Plate Catering, a division of the hospitality group, which also owns nine beach-area restaurants in Delaware. A 10th restaurant, Bluecoast Seafood Grill & Raw Bar, is scheduled to open in June.

Heffernan, who graduated from the University of Delaware in 2016, attended Cape Henlopen High School

Heffernan, who has experience in the restaurant industry, began working for SoDel Concepts in summer 2014. She’s worked at three of the company’s restaurants. When she graduated from UD, she became the assistant manager of Matt’s Fish Camp in Lewes. 

Plate Catering handles a variety of events, from in-home dinners to wedding receptions on the beach. In addition to the catering company, SoDel Concepts has a hospitality consulting and management divison, which provides services to dining venues such as Bayside Resort Golf Club in Selbyville, Bear Trap Dunes Golf Club in Ocean View and Baywood Greens in Long Neck.

PRSA names new officers

The members of the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA), Delaware Chapter voted to elect new officers to its board. They include Kim Turner president, Ken Grant president-elect and Natalie Hines secretary.

Turner is the Communications Director at the Food Bank of Delaware. She is a 2006 graduate of the University of Delaware with a bachelor’s degree in Communications and a 2012 graduate of Wilmington University with an MS in Management with a concentration in Public Administration. She has been an active member of PRSA since 2014.

President-Elect Grant has more than 25 years of experience in media, politics, and marketing in Delaware, working in print, radio, and exploring communication changes through social media. He currently serves as Public & Government Affairs Manager for AAA Mid-Atlantic.

Hines coordinates employee communications efforts and provides public relations, social media programs and integrated marketing for clients nationwide at Tipton Communications. Before joining Tipton, she served as president of the Public Relations Student Society (PRSSA) for the University of Delaware Chapter from 2014 to 2015. She earned her bachelor’s degree in mass communication with minors in advertising and organizational community leadership from the University of Delaware.

University of Delaware Press names senior editor

The University of Delaware Press has announced the appointment of senior editor Julia Oestreich as its new director, effective Jan. 1, 2017.

The recipient of a doctorate in history from Temple University in 2011, Oestreich has worked in scholarly publishing for 10 years.

She began her career with the Jewish Publication Society, starting as an editorial and development assistant before being promoted to assistant editor. While there, she managed numerous projects including Outside the Bible, a three-volume collection of commentaries by over 70 authors on ancient Jewish biblical and post-biblical texts.

Oestreich came to the University of Delaware Press in October 2011 as managing editor, under the supervision of director Donald C. Mell, professor of English. When Mell retired after 17 years of leading the press in January 2016, Edward Larkin, professor of English, was named interim director.

She will also work in consultation with the press editorial board. Comprised of numerous University of Delaware faculty members, the board makes decisions on which projects to acquire and determines the direction of the press booklist.

The University of Delaware Press was established in 1922 and has become a publisher with particular strengths in the fields of literary studies, French literature and culture, and art history, as well as publishing books of regional interest. It publishes 15-20 books per year and is housed in the Morris Library.

Berkshire Hathaway addition

Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Fox & Roach, Realtors Brandywine Office, welcomed Jessica Fisher as a sales associate. Fisher resides in Newark and serves New Castle County.
