The I-95 northbound ramp to Route 896 southbound at the edge of Newark was closed this week until the $280 million two-year-long interchange project is completed. Motorists will be directed to Route 273-I-95 Interchange a few miles to the northeast.

The interchange project aims to reduce accidents and improve traffic flow at the interchange and will allow pedestrian and bicycle traffic. The closed ramp was the site of numerous accidents due partly to merging traffic into 896.

The detour may have a minor impact on Newark-area travelers who often avoid tolls by exiting I-95 on Elkton Road in Maryland.
