Grain Exchange has finally opened at the University of Delaware STAR Campus on the south end of Newark after delays arising from supply chain issues and the pandemic.

The restaurant is the sixth for OMG Hospitality, which got its start at the former East End Cafe on Newark’s Main Street in 2015. Grain on Main features live music, a mainstay at East End.

Grain also operates a coffee shop at its Lewes location at the ferry terminal. A coffee shop will also operate out of the STAR location.

Grain is named in honor of little-known Delaware inventor Oliver Evans whose work included steam-powered equipment and flour mills.

The restaurant will be open for lunch, dinner and weekend brunch at the campus which houses classrooms and research centers. The campus is the site of the former Chrysler assembly plant. The opening comes in time for outdoor dining.

It will later offer delivery and catering service at the campus, which employs at least a couple of thousand people. The newest Grain is located at 591 Collaboration Way on the growing campus.

Owners are Jim O’Donoghue and Lee Mikles.

Bing’s Bake & Brew opens second location

Bing’s Bake & Brew purchased The Little French Café of Newark on 64 East Main Street from Martha Barrier who operated the business for two years at the former Brewed Awakenings.

Bake and Brew has a second location off South Main Street that had been a popular coffee spot owned by a small chain. The newest Bake and Brew was at the site of a Brewed Awakenings.

According to a social media post, Bake and Brew will offer many Little French Cafe menu items.

Also offered will be a dessert menu from Bing’s landmark bakery on Main Street.

A grand opening is coming this summer.

Burger Battle returns

The all-volunteer event raises funds for food related programs. Ticket sales will get underway next month. Last year’s event was sold out.
