The City of Newark has received $532,000 in grant funding from Energize Delaware and the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control.
DNREC’s Electric Vehicle Charging Equipment Rebates Program, which supports the Delaware Clean Vehicle Rebate Program. The City of Newark is the first to purchase electric vehicles using Energize Delaware’s EVs for Municipalities and local Government Grant.
“Newark is proud to be a sustainability leader in Delaware,” said Jeff Martindale, chief procurement & projects officer. “The grant funding will allow us to expand our electrified fleet and increase the number of charging spaces by 200%, while also planning for an expansion of electric vehicles in the future.”
Energize Delaware awarded $490,000 to the City earlier this year for the purchase of electric vehicles, associated contractual work and infrastructure improvements. This money will be used to purchase four EVs, two e-mowers, six charging stations throughout the City, and cover the cost of an EV charging station feasibility study.
To date, the Parks & Recreation Department has received two e-mowers and the Newark Police Department (NPD) received a Ford Lightning F-150. NPD is the first police agency in Delaware to add a Lightning to its fleet. Last month, the Administration Department received a Nissan Leaf and the Electric Department received a Volkswagen ID.4.
“Energize Delaware is proud to provide $490,000 in grants to the City of Newark for the purchase of electric vehicles, charging stations, and e-mowers. Newark is leading by example to reduce harmful greenhouse gas emissions and we’re delighted to take part in this effort and many more to come,” said Drew Slater, executive director of Energize Delaware.
The charging stations will be added to the Police Department parking lot, Field Operations Complex located on Phillips Avenue, the City Hall parking lot, and Municipal Lot 1. The City will receive $42,000 from DNREC in the form of charging station rebates.
