Signs point to Wilmington becoming the re-election campaign headquarters of President Joe Biden, CNN, and other news outlets reported. The selection would keep Wilmington in the national spotlight.

Biden formally announced his bid for re-election on Tuesday. The city had long been rumored as a top candidate for the headquarters.

Biden and First Lady Jill Biden spend many weekends at their Delaware homes, one near Greenville and a vacation home near Rehoboth Beach. CNN noted that Wilmington could be the “nominal” campaign headquarters. That would limit the economic impact of the campaign on the Wilmington economy. The 2020 headquarters was based in Philadelphia.

Biden won the 2020 election over incumbent Donald Trump with many staffers working remotely due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The frequent trips add a modest economic boost to the Wilmington area, with aides, media, and others staying in the city’s hotels.

Biden has ties to Philadelphia and the University of Pennsylvania, where he taught law courses. In Delaware, the University of Delaware graduate has a school of public policy named in his honor. UD also is home for papers and documents accumulated during his long period in the U.S. Senate.

One thing the Biden campaign will not have to worry about is finding office space in Wilmington. Corporate downsizing and the pandemic have led to a glut of office space in the city.
