This year American Express’ “Backing Small Business” grant program is awarding $5,000 grants to 350 small businesses.
The event is in its second year and last year, no First State businesses received grants. The deadline for applications is approaching.
In the fall of this year, 25 of the grantees will also receive additional enhancement grants of $25,000 to fund innovative revitalization projects such as business expansion, capital improvements, or investment in technology that would further improve their businesses, while providing goods or services that address cultural, environmental, and/or access needs in their local community.
In the first year of the grant program, nearly 45% of grantees indicatedd that the Backing Small Businesses grant was essential in keeping their businesses open. Recipients used the grant for a range of business needs including property improvements (34%) and expanding their businesses and creating new revenue opportunities (31%).
