Science workforce development  director named

Two state organizations supporting Delaware’s life science research and economic growth announced the appointment of Katie Lakofsky,   to a new position spearheading workforce development and university-industry relations.

Kakofsky

The role was conceived and will be jointly funded by the Delaware Biotechnology Institute (DBI) at the University of Delaware and the Delaware BioScience Association (Delaware Bio) to develop and implement a   strategy to deliver a talent pipeline for the diverse range of career opportunities in the region’s  biotech ecosystem. Lakofsky will also be focused on strengthening industry ties with Delaware research and educational institutions.
Lakofsky currently serves as director of workforce development and community education at Delaware Technical Community College.

Earlier this year Delaware Bio released results of a member survey underlining significant current and future industry needs to fill in roles spanning advanced manufacturing, operations, management and biomedical technology and product research and development. Every firm reported having openings at all levels of their organization, and while roles requiring bachelor’s and advanced degrees are in demand, most companies are also actively recruiting for positions requiring a high school education, training certificate or a 2-year associates degree.  And nearly every company said they would be interested in training partnerships with the state or an educational institution.

Smith stepping down from Healthcare Association

Smith

The Delaware Healthcare Association (DHA), the state’s hospital trade group, announced that longtime president and CEO Wayne Smith is stepping down.

“It has been a great 15  years working with the remarkable people in healthcare in our state,” Smith said.

“I’ve enjoyed the challenges that come with guiding an organization frequently at the center of policy initiatives,” Smith stated.  “Delaware hospitals are some of the most creative and resilient in the nation and we’ve found willing partners with whom to address issues and opportunities.”

Smith pointed to his role during the COVID-19 pandemic as some of his most rewarding work.  “I got to do things that never would occur in ‘normal’ times.  From structuring a hospital relief fund for our members, to standing up the rapid CNA training initiative for national guard members, to just recently attracting over 200 licensed nurses to step forward and help meet the pediatric RSV and flu surge.  This was important and significant stuff that had to turn on a dime because of crises in front of us.  The Governor and his team have been great partners with these creative and timely actions,” Smith stated.

Smith is best known for serving as a state legislator and  Republican House Majority Leader prior to Democrats taking control of  both the state House and Senate. Smith will continue to serve DHA in an advisory capacity through February 28, 2023, while the association initiates a national search for his replacement.
