Delaware’s first renaissance fair is sold out.

Known as the Delaware Renaissance Faire, the event is scheduled for Saturday and Sunday in the Townsend area.

Publicity for the event was minimal, but renaissance fairs have a loyal following, with an online national list available.

The location in southern New Castle County at 474 Fleming Landing Road, sometimes known as Firebase Lloyd, has been used for outdoor festivals.

The Delaware organizer also operates a renaissance fair in Connecticut that runs for three weekends.

Renaissance fairs, a popular attraction in neighboring Maryland and Pennsylvania, feature entertainment and food with fairgoers often dressing up in period attire. Performers include musicians, falconers and even jousting at a New Jersey fair.

The fairs can feature English, Viking and Spanish themes. The popularity of Viking themed dhows and Game of Thrones brought new fans.

The fairs are large scale events that attract sizable crowds, with performers who travel from state to state. The fairs are often held in Sunbelt states in the fall, winter and spring, although shorter festivals are held year-round throughout the nation.

The Pennsylvania fair in Lancaster County runs on weekends from Labor Day weekend until the end of October.

Due to the popularity of the large fairs, smaller events with shorter run times have emerged, with Delaware being the latest example.
