A Georgetown salvage yard has been fined $1.7 million for environmental violations.
The order was issued by Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control Secretary Shawn Garvin to Donovan Salvage Works, Inc.
The business was cited for numerous violations that included its scrap tire operation and waste dumps at its operations include salvage work on railroad cars and recreational vehicles as well as cars and trucks.
The site, which at one time housed a button factory, has been used as a salvage yard for decades.
Waste dumps contained a variety of materials including batteries. Salvage operations are required to send items that cannot be recycled to landfills or other waste-handling sites.
According to the order, the Georgetown was inspected in April and was given time to comply with the terms of the order.
The company was in the news several years ago when a customer was killed when attempting to take parts off a vehicle. (Click on the headline below)
Garvin said the company did not correct a number of violations. The company has a history of environmental issues with an assessment for PCBs dating back to 2008. Findings indicated the industrial chemicals were at the site but had not made their way into the groundwater supply.
