As major construction winds down on Interstate 95 in Wilmington, both northbound and southbound lanes will be closed over the weekend.

The Delaware Department of Transportation gave the announcement a light touch, humorously suggesting on social media the use of traffic cone Halloween costumes to mark the occasion.

I-95 northbound will be closed from 9 p.m., Thursday to 5 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 28, between the I-495 split and Exit 8 and the Route 202 Interchange. The same route closes for the entire weekend, beginning at 9 p.m. Friday, Oct. 28 through 5 a.m. Monday, Oct. 31.

The announcement also brought to mind, a half-century-old segment of a Candid Camera segment over Delaware being “closed.”

Also, I-95 southbound will close at 10 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 29, until 6 a.m. on Sunday, Oct. 30 at Exit 6, with all traffic detoured to Martin Luther King Boulevard. The 2nd Street on-ramp to I-95 southbound will also be closed during this time for the removal of an overhead sign at the south end of the project.

Work on the project got underway in Feb. 2021 and has proceeded with few hitches.

The area, which has seen lane closings during that period, has seen a rash of accidents.

Speed cameras were installed under legislation passed by the General Assembly.
