The message from voters was loud and clear.

Delaware Auditor of Accounts Kathy McGuiness needs to move on with the next chapter of her life.

She lost by a more than two-to-one margin, with the figure rising to three to one in Sussex, her home county.

In the event that you just emerged from a coma, McGuiness was convicted of two misdemeanor counts and now faces sentencing next month after a judge rejected requests for the charges  to be thrown out.

There had been worries that McGuiness had enough name recognition and might overcome that barrier.

However, her legal troubles made their way into the regional and at times the national media, since public officials typically resign  under such circumstances.

The wise course would be to resign now and serve a sentence that may not include jail time.

Hockessin resident Lydia York is now the Democratic nominee. York is a Hockessin attorney with a corporate finance background.

Media reports suggest York will focus on the duties of the office during the final stretch of  a campaign as  she squares off against another Hockessin resident,  lawyer Janice Lorrah.

Lorrah’s headline on her LinkedIn page  says she is a  Stay-at-Home Momma & Freedom Fighter.

Lorrah has maintained a law license and elsewhere in her profile lists her occupation as a health care lawyer.

My advice to both candidates is to focus on the core functions of the office and press for additional resources. One initiative worth pursuing are  audits that stress measures to streamline processes and save taxpayers money.

Over the decades, the auditor’s office has resembed a fire department that shows up after the house has burned down.- Doug Rainey, chief content officer.
