The cooling tower at the former B.L. England Power Station in Cape May County  will come down in an implosion slated for  Thursday at 9:30 a.m.

Delmarva Power sister company Atlantic City Electric several years ago  sold  the coal and fuel oil-powered generating plant to a non-utility  operator.

Beasley’s Point Development Group gave the go-ahead for asbestos removal and demolition work after a conversion to natural gas failed over pipeline and other issues.

The substation at at the site is now being eyed for incoming power lines from a wind power project off the Jersey  coast.

Seventy miles to the south in Delaware, NRG’s  coal-fired  Indian River Power Plant faces a similar fate, although its closing has been delayed by a few years for improvements to the grid in the area. Delmarva Power is the former owner of  Indian River.

Indian River is also mentioned as a site for incoming power lines from offshore wind developments off the coasts of Maryland and Delaware.
