Delaware gas prices dropped by a penny and a half s a gallon between Tuesday and Wednesday as more stations moved toward $4 a gallon regular.

AAA’s Fuel Finder reported that of $4 a gallon regular gas was widely available in many areas with the two stations in Middletown seeing a gas war of sorts with one station posting a $3.80 a gallon price. Some stations charge extra for credit card purchases.

According to AAA even with the recent dip in gas prices, the average cost of filling a vehicle iwth a 15-gallon tanks is $59, down from about $70  last month, but well above the year ago figure of $46.

AAA reported the drop in gas prices is leading to speculation that demand will increase and lead to future price hikes.

“We know that most American drivers have made significant changes in their driving habits to cope with high gas prices,” said Andrew Gross, AAA spokesperson. “But with gas below $4 a gallon at nearly half of the gas stations around the country, it’s possible that gas demand could rise.”

According to new data from the Energy Information Administration, gas demand increased from 8.52 million barrels a day to 9.25 million  barrels a day last week. The estimated rate is 80,000 barrels a day lower than last year, but it could slow pump price decreases if the trend holds. Additionally, total domestic gasoline stocks decreased by 3.3 million barrels to 225.1
