Fire damages battery processing area at Clarios plant in Middletown

The Delaware Office of the State Fire Marshal determined that a Saturday night fire that damaged a Middletown distribution/manufacturing  site was accidential. 

The blaze, reported shortly after 11  p.m. at  Clarios, formerly Johnson Controls,  at 50 Patriot Drive in the Westown Business Park. 

The Volunteer Hose Company arrived  inside the battery processing section.  Several mutual aid fire companies assisted at the scene of what could have been a dangerous fire, due to the materials in batteries.


 Deputy fire marshals  determined fire was caused by a malfunction with mechanical equipment.  The fire suppression system was activated along with the building’s fire alarm system.  The fire was contained to the initial equipment and did not spread.

No damage estimte has been determined.  There were no reported injuries.

It was the second fire at a New Castle County  distribution site in recent weeks.
