Motorists heading out for the Fourth of July holiday are getting a little relief at the pump.

The Thursday report from AAA showed the average price for regular in Delaware had dropped to $4.78 a gallon, down about 14 cents from a week earlier. The price of regular had risen to as high as $5 a gallon.

Still, gasoline prices rose nearly 18 cents a gallon during June, with crude oil prices remaining above $100 a barrel.

Putting downward pressure on Delaware gas prices is Maryland, which is matching Delaware’s price at the pump, despite a gas tax that is a dozen cents a gallon higher than the First State Figure.

Also, Wawa rival Sheetz lowered its gas price over the July 4 holiday period. Sheetz has no stores in Delaware but does have about 30 locations in Maryland and more than 290 store/stations in Pennsylvania.
