With the U.S. gaining 390,000 jobs in May, slightly less than in the previous month, WalletHub today released updated rankings for the States Whose Unemployment Rates Are Bouncing Back Most.
In order to identify the states whose unemployment rates are bouncing back most, WalletHub compared the 50 states and the District of Columbia based on six key metrics that compare unemployment rate statistics from the latest month for which data is available (May 2022) to key dates in 2019, 2020 and 2021.
Bounced Back Most | Bounced Back Least |
1. Minnesota | 42. New York |
2. New Hampshire | 43. Pennsylvania |
3. Nebraska | 44. Alaska |
4. Indiana | 45. Texas |

The Mid-Atlantic has seen weaker job growth than other regions, with Pennsylvania 42nd and Maryland 38th. New England has seen stronger job growth with Rhode Island, Vermont, and New Hampshire bouncing back the strongest.
More stringent Covid restrictions have been blamed for the weak performance of the Mid-Atlantic although New England states had similar mandates in place. Minnesota, which ranks No. 1 in its recovery, had more restrictions than states like neighboring South Dakota.
