Wegmans is holding a virtual hiring event on Monday in anticipation of a fall opening for its first Delaware store.

The supermarket chain, based in Rochester, NY, has been hiring staff for the store, with some employees training at their location in Concordville, PA.

The new store is at the intersection of Lancaster Pike and Barley Mill Road, a short distance from the home of President Joe Biden. The store is part of a mixed-use development at the former DuPont Co. site near Greenville.

The developer is Newport-based  Pettinaro, which also has shopping center, office, and apartment holdings in Greenville.

The store will employ around 450 people at the Wilmington store, a majority of whom will be hired locally.

Wegmans features a large deli and prepared-food department that will require a variety of positions, including culinary professionals.

The store is hosting a virtual hiring event on Monday, May 9th from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. and is seeking to fill 85 full-time positions.

All interviews for this event will be done virtually or by phone. Hiring for part-time positions will begin in June.

Similar to Wegmans’ other stores, the 84,000 square-foot supermarket will have a European open-air market look and feel, according to a release.

The store will be smaller than the Wegmans Concordville location, which has 111,000 square feet and includes a beer and wine department.

The company is set to open three locations this year in Carlyle, VA; Washington, D.C; and Wilmington.

Wegmans is expected to shake up a Wilmington-area grocery market that is now dominated by the Shoprite and Acme chains.

Acme has been losing market share to Shoprite in the Delaware Valley despite having a larger number of stores.

Wegmans Food Markets, Inc. is a 106-store supermarket chain with stores in New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Virginia, Maryland, Massachusetts, and North Carolina.

The family-owned company has been named one of the ‘100 Best Companies to Work For’ by Fortune magazine for 25 consecutive years, ranking #3 in 2022. Consumer Reports ranked Wegmans in the top tier among 96 grocery chains in the nation.
