New case increase second highest in the nation

Delaware is not immune from an uptick in Covid-19 cases and hospitalizations on the East Coast and other areas.

A map from Axios shows the state with the second-highest increase in new cases, with only Connecticut topping the First State. The increase was based on a two-week period. Nearly all states are now reporting an increase in new cases, the newsletter site reported.

On Monday, five new deaths were reported, three Sussex County residents and two from Kent who ranged from their 70s to their 90s.

All five had underlying health conditions, and three were not vaccinated, while two were fully vaccinated. The death is now 2,936. The death rate per 100,000 population has been dropping from the virus

No new deaths were reported on Tuesday night.

Hospitalization numbers continued to rise during the week, with 155  on Tuesday, up by 22  from a day earlier. Sixteen individuals are in critical condition. Earlier this spring, the number of critical cases dropped to zero on some days.

Earlier in the spring, hospitalizations had fallen into the low 20s.,

Still, hospitalizations are far fewer than the more than 700 reported in early January. That surge prompted Gov. John Carney to reimpose an indoor mask mandate for a limited period.

Carney has been self-isolating after testing positive for Covid-19.

The number of people in Delaware testing positive in the seven-day rolling average was 18.4 percent. The figure in many cases does not capture many who test positive and self-isolate.

As of this week, a CDC tracker had New Castle County as a moderate (yellow) risk area, with Kent and Sussex in the high or red territory. Both categories come with the suggestion that masks be worn indoors.
