The Federal Highway Administration has approved an initial study recommending a new $8 billion Chesapeake Bay span near the current bridge..

Several options were studied, including one bridge would cross into Cecil County, MD and would have fed traffic into Delaware roads.

The study determined that the best option was near the current bridge

Some Eastern Shore residents want no new bridge and urge a look at options such as mass transit and electrically powered ferries.

Bridge traffic swells and back-ups are frequent in the summer as motorists make their way to Ocean City, MD and other beach areas.

A no bridge option is still on the table if funds are available for a second study.
