Frontier Airlines will launch nonstop service from Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) to six new destinations – Chicago Midway, Kansas City, Cincinnati, Boston, Cleveland, and San Antonio.

The new service begins late this spring and is scheduled to operate seasonally. The service is geared to leisure travelers with flights operating three to four times a week. The exception is Chicago Midway, which will have one daily flight to and from Philadelphia. Frontier is taking on Southwest, which offers daily nonstops from Philadelphia to Midway, one of its busiest hubs.

“We are excited to announce this expansion of service at Philadelphia International Airport,” said Josh Flyr, vice president network & operational design, Frontier Airlines. “Frontier is currently Philadelphia’s second-largest carrier based on destinations served and, with the addition of these new routes, we will offer nonstop service to 32 destinations in total from PHL, more than ever before. Today’s announcement is a reflection of our very strong commitment to serving the Philadelphia community with Frontier’s ultra-low fares and friendly service.”

“We anticipate this summer to be very busy at PHL, with both leisure and business travelers. The routes Frontier is launching and restoring from PHL will give our passengers more choices to key destinations, whether they are flying to visit family, for vacation or for work, just in time for summer,” said Philadelphia International Airport CEO Chellie Cameron. “Frontier continues to be a strong partner for PHL and we thank Frontier for once again understanding the needs of PHL and our guests and bringing that service to Philadelphia.”

Frontier operates on the ultra-low fare model with low base fares and charges for carry-on luggage, soft drinks, seat assignments, and checked luggage.

Frontier and Spirit Airlines, both of which operate from Philly and Baltimore-Washington have announced plans to merge, subject to antitrust approval. The merger would create make the combined carriers a solid No. 2 in flights from Philadelphia, behind American.

While both use the ultra-low fare model, Spirit typically offers daily flights to its destinations, while Frontier often offers service a few times a week. Frontier does offer daily flights to Orlando, Tampa, and Denver from Philly.

Avelo offering BWI-New Haven flights

Start-up airline Avelo will add service from Baltimore-Washington Thurgood Marshall International Airport to New Haven, CT, beginning in late May.

Avelo will operate five weekly roundtrip flights between BWI Marshall Airport and Tweed-New Haven Airport, the airline’s East Coast base. The airline will add a sixth day of service in mid-June.

Avelo currently serves 18 destinations in the United States, many mid-sized markets. In addition to New Haven, Avelo will operate a hub at Hollywood-Burbank Airport to serve western destinations.
